One of the New World Foundation's latest youth programmes is a dance project in collaboration with “Chance 4 All”. In 2004 NWF had a greater influx of youth wanting to join our programmes. We explored various avenues of ways to expand and discovered that the youth had a keen interest in the arts. In Lavender Hill and the surrounding areas, many children are talented in the field of dance and drama. It has been inspirational to observe these young people's determination and dedication to strive above their circumstances through dance. We, at New World Foundation, have realized that the arts offer a means of escaping the realities our youth are faced with by everyday living in Lavender Hill. In 2004, the organization “Chance 4 All” based in the Netherlands contacted NWF regarding a “Dance 4 All” project which they sponsor in the community of Hout Bay , a community who shares similar social problems as Lavender Hill. This, together with the ever increasing number of young people wanting to join our programmes, have led us to establish our very own “Dance 4 All”. Due to the shortage of recreational facilities, Mrs Classen, the head mistress of Hillwood Primary School has offered us a venue free of charge. However, this venue needs to be renovated and developed into a dance studio. Now that the funding for the project has been approved, the renovations are underway. The project will be run by New World Foundation in collaboration with “Chance 4 All” and Hillwood Primary School . We will run the dance project five days a week (Monday – Friday) and would like to host two, one and a half hour sessions per day. The aims and objectives for the project are: - Nurture and promote talent, preparing talented youth for a possible career in performing arts or as a dance teacher. - Provide constructive and creative extra mural activities. - To create an appreciation and understanding for the performing arts amongst our children. - To inform, not only about dance, but to use dance as a vehicle to address prevalent issues such as AIDS and abuse. |
